Inclusive Sustainable Underwear and Lingerie Brands You Should Know

In the sustainable fashion community, second-hand is usually a big option and a favorite/primary choice. But, second-hand lingerie? Personally, not my cup of tea.

Thankfully, sustainable lingerie is making its way and growing in the industry. But what’s missing is the inclusive aspect – something that women already struggle with, with regular brands.

So I have done my research and found the sustainable lingerie brands that offer just that below! Some brands on this list only go as small/big as 1X, but still provide a better range than other sustainable brands. Therefore, inclusive sustainable underwear is still in its early stages where more brands need to improve their offerings.

Pact

Source: Pact

Price: $-$$
Sizes: XS – XL (underwear and bralettes)
Description: The brand uses GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton (with a blend of elastane) in Fair Trade certified facilities. On its website, Pact implies not using toxic dyes, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers in its products.  This inclusive sustainable underwear brand is popular for its super soft products. I love the occasional lace, but nothing beats organic cotton underwear in terms of comfort and feeling good, in my opinion. 😉

Luva Huva

Price: $$
Sizes: 30/32A – 38/40E (bras), custom/”made to fit” lingerie with no extra charge
Description: **website temporarily unavailable (update April 2019)
Handmade in its UK, in-house private studio, Luva Huva’s underwear is made of eco-friendly and ethically sourced fabrics like GOTS certified organic cotton, with low impact, non-toxic dyes. Its philosophy revolves around slow fashion, which is creating high-quality, long-lasting products. To minimize waste, this inclusive sustainable brand does made-to-order pieces. It focuses on working with local suppliers and with vintage and end-of-line fabrics.

Organic Basics

Price: $$
Sizes: XS-XL (underwear and bralettes)
Description: Like Pact, this brand creates basics made of long-lasting organic fibers. Organic Basics claims to only use “Class A and B fibers.” This includes GOTS certified organic cotton only colored with organic dyes, SilverTech (a material made of silver, which apparently prevents the need for frequent washing and has antibacterial and thermodynamic properties!!), and recycled nylon. Plus, the brand visits its factories once every 3 months and audits them every year using a third party. Besides having a GOTS certificate, this sustainable brand is a member of SEDEX, and is BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) and OEKO-TEX 100 certified. Learn more about each of its factories in Turkey and Portugal. Finally, it uses 100% recycled and recyclable plastic packaging, but the brand is open to better sustainable options.

NAJA

Price: $-$$
Sizes: XS-2XL (underwear), 32B – 36DD (bras)
Description: Naja strives to make high quality and long-lasting products. Some of its pieces are made of organic cotton, but others are still predominantly nylon, elastane, and spandex-made (plastic-derived materials). It has, however, a zero waste collection where the brand uses recycled scrap fabrics that would alternatively end up in landfills. It also uses digital and sublimation printing technologies rather than conventional fabric dyes, which significantly reduces water waste. Finally, this inclusive sustainable underwear brand’s ethos revolves around empowering women. Through its “Underwear for Hope program,” Naja gives women in the slums of Colombia employment opportunities offering above market wages with healthcare benefits. The brand also donates 2% of revenue to local charities supporting these women’s continuing education.

What I enjoy about the website is that on each product page, you can see and learn more about the woman behind the craft, making it more personal and “human.”

Fortnight

Price: $$$
Sizes: S-2XL (underwear), up to G cup (bras)
Description: This sustainable brand’s pieces are locally handcrafted in Toronto. While its products are not necessarily eco-friendly as it uses synthetic materials like nylon and elastane, it promotes quality, slow, made-to-last fashion with fabrics sourced from Europe. Craftsmanship is at the heart of Fortnight, where precision and care is at the forefront. The brand wants every piece of its lingerie to be light, delicate, and comfortable, as well as offer high performance and durability.

Lara Intimates

Price: ££
Sizes: XS-XL (underwear), 26A – 36I (bras), made-to-order
Description: The brand creates its lingerie in-house, in its studio in Soho, London.  The founders of Lara Intimates wanted to provide quality pieces that are socially and environmentally conscious, and that fit your body. *We all know that finding a bra that fits perfectly can be a struggle.* In addition, the brand uses reclaimed fabrics that come from luxury surplus material from large factories or brands. Its labels and packaging are also made in the UK from eco-friendly sources. Finally, this sustainable underwear brand also tries to reduce its factory waste as much as possible by cutting out fabric with little space in-between.
