6 Ways to Style the Timeless Trench Coat

Spring is around the corner and I love wearing trench coats any time it’s not too cold nor too hot. In Canada, the weather is quite unpredictable no matter the season.

My trench coat is secondhand from the marketplace Depop (and I’ve been looking for one for ages – as a petite, finding the right length was essential). I really like this one because it has slightly flared sleeves, which is a nice little detail, and different from the usual trench coats.

While a classic go-to outfit is to style this coat with a comfy knit or tee and jeans, here are my takes on the classic combination as well as other ways I style the timeless trench coat. Watch the IGTV version.

OUTFIT #1

I am a sucker for an all-black or neutral color outfit. For the first outfit, I paired my 5-year-old classic black denim pants with a thrifted black wool mock-neck sweater, a black belt from Toronto-based brand Brave Leather and my go-to white sneakers by Veja. This is my effortless, comfy, going to run errands trench outfit.

OUTFIT #2

The second outfit is more preppy: a classic white button-up that I received as a gift and that I have for 5 years now, my 6-year-old blue skinny jeans, a secondhand plaid or checkered blazer, and black slides, both from the marketplace Depop. This is a classic work outfit.

OUTFIT #3

With the same white button-up, I added a silk scarf that I found at a London flea market 3 years ago. To add interesting textures and details to a neutral outfit, I also paired these with secondhand leather trousers from Depop and my 4-year-old tan suede sling-backs. This is my feeling Good as Hell (Lizzo song), big boss energy outfit.

OUTFIT #4

For my fourth outfit, I went for a pair of navy trousers from Filippa K, a classic black turtleneck made from thrifted recycled materials and my 4-year-old black ankle heeled boots. To complete the outfit, I wore a beret from Depop (as you can see it is my go-to marketplace) and a vintage sterling silver necklace from a Toronto-based thrift shop Courage My Love. I personally chose the chain and pendant from the vast selection. This outfit gives off artsy-romantic vibes, perhaps an outfit nightly coffee walks.

OUTFIT #5

For this outfit, I went more towards the feminine look. I paired my KOTN Alabaster turtleneck with a faux-silk midi skirt and the same black ankle heeled boots. My sunglasses are from a London flea market and the silver necklace is the same one from Courage My Love. I would wear this outfit on a day/night out with friends.

OUTFIT #6

The last outfit is another comfy outfit, but with a more feminine touch and color (something I don’t usually have in my wardrobe). Back to denim, I wore my good old white ribcage Levi’s straight-leg denim with a mustard yellow wrap top that I got from Depop. To complete the look, I wore my trusty pair of white Veja sneakers and the same vintage silver necklace layered with a shorter silver necklace from a Canadian Etsy vendor.

While I presented all these outfits with specific occasions, I would honestly just wear what I feel like wearing any day, any occasion. Outfit 3 for errands, anyone? 😉
