A Simple Guide to Slow, Sustainable Fashion and Living

You love fashion, but know about its unethical and unsustainable practices, and you are searching for ways around that. We’re on the same boat!
But what is “sustainable” fashion? Currently, there is no official definition. But it includes sourcing, producing, consuming, and caring for your items in an environmental and socio-economic way.
It’s about considering all stages of the product life cycle and reducing any related waste, as well as supporting the best labour conditions and wages for workers. This applies to all non-fashion related products too!
**I do love how the Green Strategy breaks down sustainable fashion into 7 forms.

So as a consumer, what to do now?

1) Get Into The Mindset

The most crucial part is to understand why you are going through this sustainable journey and what it means to you. Once you have come up with a reason, it’s easy to go back to it and remember it whenever you are faced with a decision to buy. There is a story behind every item.

2) Get Inspired

There is never too much information for you to learn and share. Here are a few on sustainable fashion and living:

If you are more of a bookworm:

If you prefer listening rather than reading:

If you are more visual:

3) Assess and Plan

Use what you have – don’t start throwing away your possessions that aren’t sustainable! The best thing that you can do is use it until the end of its lifespan and discard responsibly *or upcycle if possible. * Then, think about what items you would need and are missing – basics for your wardrobe or everyday household items – and research the best eco-friendly and/or fair trade options. Be mindful of your next conscious choices. Just like with everything else, planning and budgeting keeps you on track.

4) Finally, most importantly, Take it Slow.

You’re going to want to try to do everything you see and read about, but remember, your personal lifestyle will determine your sustainable choices. This is your journey – it will not be the same for everyone. You will be constantly learning and will eventually transform the small steps and changes into lifestyle habits!
